Sun shines for day of dance

Posted on Tuesday, 06 July 2010 12:18PM by Judy and the Peakdistrict Online Team
The sun came out in full force at the weekend for a Peak District event that encourages people to familiarise themselves with different cultures through dance.

On Saturday, June 26, Bakewell was full of people enjoying the colourful eighth International Day of Dance.

more than 25 groups representing a wide range of cultures danced in venues across the town and many encouraged audience participation with visitors trying their hand at Appalachian, swing, jive and belly dancing and more.

One new group this year was the Karen Community, with their unique style of Burmese dancing.

Workshops were also held for salsa, Argentinian tango, Greek, European and Bhangra and Bollywood dancing.

The whole day was then rounded off in the evening with an American-style Ceilidh, with music by Appalachian Storm, who came all the way from North Carolina in the USA.

Jude Brown, who organised the event said: "It was a wonderful day, with everybody having the chance to see different types of multi-cultural dances they may not otherwise be able to see.

"It was great to see all the groups in their costumes and a town full of dance and music."
